News! News! News! What’s New?! /2018/04/13/news-news-news-whats-new/ Fri, 13 Apr 2018 04:56:44 +0000 /?p=2894 Great News Caledonian Fans!! Construction is done!!   All DONE!!  So we can get back to normal.  Camping will be available with the bathrooms and showers available as we’ve done in the past. We are looking forward to a great year! Here are some things to look forward to this 2018.

The Big Idaho Potato Truck will be in Athena for the parade and after for kids fun and stuff. They come bearing their “Big Helping” program. This is a special program which helps them to benefit the communities they travel through. For every signature they get at the Big Idaho Potato Truck, they will pay $1 each for up to 500 signatures and donate the $500 to a charity of our choice!  There are kids’ games and plenty more, we are so excited they could come. They have never been to a Highland Games before so lets show them a great time!

The lovely Cassandra Humphrys, dance instructor from Mid-Columbia Highland Dance studio is excited to offer Highland Dancing classes in Athena, starting immediately! We hope some students will even be able to dance in our Shindig at Caledonian! As an outgrowth of this grant, we may be able to reinstate our Caledonian Highland Dancing Competition next year.  Let’s hope for the best! We’ve got our fingers crossed.

Vendors will be in the park this year! We have been convinced that anything could happen so here we go! Vendors may apply at athenacaledoniangames@gmail.com  and www.athenacaledoniangames.org

We are ready to take a chance on a new up to date look. A colorful festival that is ancient but we breathe life into all of it again and again. We need your input. We request your presence to make our Athena Caledonian Games colorful and authentic and exciting. So come on down and don’t forget, it’s the second full weekend in July every year!!

National Tartan Day is April 6.  It is a day designated by Senate Resolution in 1998 and signed by  Presidential Proclamation by President George W. Bush in 2005.   It is a day to remember our ancestors and recognize the contributions that the Scottish have made to our way of life.  Inventions and literature by Scots-Americans have shown innovative and creative inspiration throughout American history.  Examples of a few Scots and their contributions include: in Medicine,  Alexander Fleming, who discovered Penicillin;  in Sports:  James Naismith, who invented the game of Basketball; John Logie Baird, who invented Television:  Robert Burns, Scottish national poet;  John Paul Jones, founder of the American Navy; Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the Telephone, and Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts USA.

Tartan Day is designated April 6 because on that day in 1320, the Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed at Arbroath, Scotland.  In part that document reads:  “It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom….for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.”

In Athena Tartan Day will be recognized with a Scotch Egg for lunch at the Sugar Shack.   Athena Caledonian Games suggests wearing a plaid on Tartan Day, April 6, 2018.

Tree of Life Blanket /2017/06/12/tree-of-life-blanket/ Mon, 12 Jun 2017 17:07:17 +0000 /?p=2768

The Athena Caledonian Games announces a special  project,  the Tree of Life Blanket, designed specifically for Athena Caledonian Games.   This blanket measures 48 x 63 and it is made of 100% cotton; it  is washable and preshrunk.   It is made on mills in North Carolina by Mill Street Design.
The Tree of Life was designed in 2005 by Jeanann Mitchell, artist from Milton-Freewater for Athena Caledonian Games.   She became intrigued with the Celtic Knot of Scottish origin.  She developed the Tree of Life to be adorned with Scottish bagpipes, a thistle, Highland dancing shoes, sheep and dogs —all  Scottish images of Highland Games like Athena’s, hanging in a beautifully crafted tree with Celtic knots as leaves.    Also there is a little fairy seated on a branch of the Tree of Life too because Caledonian is a wee bit magical.    The Tree of Life is superimposed over a black and red plaid for a very striking presentation.   The blankets are expected to be delivered by June 30 and will be on sold for $49.95 at the Caledonian Souvenir booth at Caledonian Games time the second weekend of July—July 8 & 9.
